Ask Dr. K

I took a morning after pill on Thursday and I had unprotected sex on Saturday is there anyway the pill is still effective?

The morning after pill is effective for 72 hours (per FDA) and up to 5 days (per medical research) after having unprotected sex and meant to be taken after unprotected penile-vaginal sex. Sexually active women should have either a prescription or the actual pills readily available. Please see for more information about emergency contraception. We provide free prescriptions for SF residents The prescription is free but users still have to pay for the medicine.

Women who use Plan B within 5 days of intercourse are likely safe from pregnancy, but not from STDs. We recommend "double protection" something to prevent pregnancy like oral contraceptives and something to prevent STDs like a condom.

To your health,
Dr. K
