Ask Dr. K
MORNING AFTER PILL EFFECTIVENESS

QUESTION
I took a morning after pill on Thursday and I had unprotected sex on Saturday is there anyway the pill is still effective?

ANSWER
The morning after pill is effective for 72 hours (per FDA) and up to 5 days (per medical research) after having unprotected sex and meant to be taken after unprotected penile-vaginal sex. Sexually active women should have either a prescription or the actual pills readily available. Please see http://www.sfcityclinic.org/services/facts-planb.asp for more information about emergency contraception. We provide free prescriptions for SF residents http://www.sfcityclinic.org/services/planb.asp The prescription is free but users still have to pay for the medicine.

Women who use Plan B within 5 days of intercourse are likely safe from pregnancy, but not from STDs. We recommend "double protection" something to prevent pregnancy like oral contraceptives and something to prevent STDs like a condom.

To your health,
Dr. K
