Ask Dr. K

Is it safe to take Viagra when on AIDS medications?

This is a good question for your doctor or whomever prescribes the Viagra for you. It would be nice if Pfizer (the maker of Viagra) educated men as well. You might ask them to do so by contacting their representatives through their website.

The bottom line is that taking Viagra together with AIDS drugs is usually safe, but there are certain AIDS medications like protease inhibitors can increase the blood level of Viagra. Generally, it is recommended to start with a low dose of Viagra, 25 mg., and see if the effects are adequate (i.e. if you're getting erections). Remember to practice safer sex when you're taking Viagra and get regular STD check ups.

To your health,
Dr. K
