Ask Dr. K

I had hip replacements two years ago. I haven't been tested for HIV. Would they have discovered I had HIV prior to and post surgery? If so, would they have informed me?

No. HIV testing is a very regulated test. In most states, the law requires doctors to inform patients that they are having an HIV test. By no means should a person assume they have had an HIV test unless a doctor has specifically told them so and showed them the results. Patients should look at test results with their doctor and go over what each result means.

To your health,
Dr. K
