Ask Dr. K
STDs FROM ORAL SEX?

QUESTION
I recently allowed a lap dance to go too far and gave the female dancer brief oral sex, where there was a lot of vaginal secretion. I have never engaged in this type of behavior before. I do not think my mouth had any cuts or lesions, but cannot be totally sure. How at risk am I for an STD?

ANSWER
Performing oral sex on a woman is a very low risk behavior. The STD most commonly associated with performing oral sex is herpes, but even this is rare. Since herpes is transmitted from skin-to-skin, the amount of vaginal secretions is not linked to the risk of getting herpes.

There are also other STDs, such as syphilis, that a person could possibly get from oral sex with a woman, but the chances of syphilis transmission through oral sex are even lower.
