Ask Dr. K
FEMALE AND MALE CONDOMS AT THE SAME TIME?

QUESTION
I recently had my first encounter with a sex worker. I asked her to use a female condom and I used a male condom. She removed her female condom before I came. The condom was intact but I am worried that it could have torn when we both had condoms on. Is this safe?

ANSWER
No, female and male condoms should not be used together. The friction between the two can cause breakage, like you were worried about. In the future, it is best to use just one or the other. Condoms can be fun and you should experiment and try each type and the many other brands out there to see which you like to use. Use lots of lube and make using condoms part of hot sex! For more information about condom usage, visit the city clinic website or inSPOT.
