Ask Dr. K
STDS ON YOUR PERIOD?

QUESTION
Can you transmit any STDs from having sex when you are on your period?

ANSWER
Yes, you can both get and give an STD, including HIV, when you are on your period. It is also a myth that you cannot get pregnant while on your period.

Using condoms consistently and correctly is the only way to prevent STD transmission if you're sexually active. Regular STD checkups can help as well if you have multiple partners, since condoms don't protect 100% from all STDs, and many STDs have no symptoms.

Sex, Etc. is a great resource for teens with sex and relationship questions.
