Ask Dr. K

I'm a 21-year-old guy who hasn't engaged much in anal sex but would like to try being a bottom. What's holding me back though, aside from the knowledge that this is a riskier type of sex, is concern about what could happen to my anus with regular penetration. Will it affect how I control my bowel movements? Will there be bleeding the first time I'm penetrated? Will my anus eventually become very loose, such that I won't be tight again?

Receptive anal sex can be very enjoyable. The key is to start slow and use plenty of lubrication. Men and women can have receptive anal sex for years and not have problems with excess relaxation of the anal sphincter. For first-timers, we recommend using a lubricated finger at first and then slowing inserting additional fingers. An erect penis can be fairly large, but once it slips past the anal sphincter, it's home free.

Of course condoms make it easier, safer and more fun. So please use a condom with any new partner and any partner whose STD and HIV status has not recently been checked. And enjoy.

To your health,
Dr. K
